Reading the atlas · photographs, dates & sources
Six places, selected for lost built fabric: three demolished landmarks, two vanished defences and the streets cleared for Via Laietana. Surviving landmarks and changes of use or name alone do not belong to this edition.
Image dates, not demolition dates: from an editorial c. 1857 for the sea gate to an undated El Torín view catalogued only as “before 1923”. Period filters use overlapping windows: 1856–1859 for the gate and the broad 1834–1923 active span for Torín, not exact exposure ranges.
Portal de Mar’s date is disputed: Commons gives c. 1885 and demolition in 1888; independently checked histories give demolition in 1859, and Barcelofília captions this same view 1857. The conflict is also displayed beside the plate.
All six real historical photographs are embedded in this page. Full frames, borders and the palace’s stereoscopic pair are retained. No AI reconstructions, colourisation, artificial ageing or invented modern comparisons. Hotel and bullring images have limited source resolution.
Pins identify approximate former sites on today’s OpenStreetMap / HOT basemap, hosted by OSM France. They are not camera positions, building footprints or a reconstructed shoreline. Only the map requires internet.
Rights labels follow Commons: five public-domain files and one CC BY 4.0 museum reproduction. Public-domain status may depend on jurisdiction; linked licensing sections give the source rationale. Research checked 16 October 2026. No new historical research added in this redesign.
